The summer is a busy time at the library, resulting in times this summer when all the ESL (English as a Second Language) books were checked out, leaving no physical resources for English language learners to borrow. This will no longer be a problem. The Sioux Center Public Library is pleased to announce that the American Library Association (ALA) and its Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS) has awarded us a $5,500 American Dream Starts @ your library® grant to expand our ESL materials and resources. This grant is generously funded by the Dollar General Literacy foundation.
The Sioux Center Public Library is one of only 44 libraries across the country to receive an American Dream grant this year. This grant makes it possible for us to provide resources, not only for patrons learning English, but also for the many volunteer teachers and tutors within the community. The expanded ESL collection will include leveled adult reading series for ESL students, a DVD series intended for self-study, audio materials, books, dictionaries, and iPads equipped with language learning apps. These additional 130+ books, 35+ DVDs, and 4 iPads are important resources for our English language learners and will benefit our community as a whole.
Come and check out our expanded ESL materials and teacher resources! An open house is scheduled for Tuesday, August 6 at 6:30 PM in meeting room A of the library. We will give a short presentation with plenty of time for you to browse the new materials and ask questions, followed by a coffee and cookie social. We hope to see you there! A Spanish language presentation will follow around 7:00 PM.
