Have you ever considered taking an active role in Sioux Center Public Library’s mission to encourage literacy enrichment for area youth or adults? Visit the library’s children’s section in the afternoon and you might just see a college student or adult sitting in a comfortable corner, reading with or to a child. They may be part of the Owl’s Nest program, a one-on-one reading buddy program for elementary students. The Owl’s Nest program is one of several flexible volunteer programs offered at the library. Maybe you are more comfortable visiting with homebound elderly residents in an area nursing home or retirement center. Our Books for Seniors program matches volunteers with homebound elderly clients to deliver books on a monthly basis. Librarians will prepare a bag of reading materials according to the client’s preference for the delivery volunteer. The volunteer can drop off the books, and if desired, sit down to share a cup of tea to discuss their favorite books. Other volunteer opportunities include assisting with children’s programs, preparing craft materials, and sanitizing children’s books. All of these programs have been developed for easy and flexible participation according to your time and schedule. If you are looking for an opportunity to have a positive impact in the lives of either young children or older adults contact Judy at 712-722-2138.
