March/April Recommendations

For this month’s Freegal recommendations, I want to tap into the St. Patrick’s Day spirit – ‘tis the season for everyone to be Irish. And conveniently, Freegal has many musical selections that help build a soundtrack for the festivities!

As a brief recap, I should remind you that Freegal is a free service that you can access through the Sioux Center Public Library website that allows you to legally download three mp3 music files each week. They are then yours to keep - to put on your digital music player or even burn onto a CD. All you have to do is start at the SCPL homepage and click on the Freegal link, on the left side halfway down. Once on the Freegal site, you log in with your SCPL card number and then you begin to browse the music catalogue.

Back to our St. Patty’s playlist - First, for a very traditional take, search for “the Chieftains”. This venerable group has been performing traditional Irish tunes on traditional Irish instruments since the 1960’s. Freegal provides you access to much of their vast catalogue. To narrow it down some, search for the album “The Essential Chieftains.” Then download “O’Sullivan’s March” which has a catchy melody and strong historical ties.

Next, search in Freegal for “once (motion picture soundtrack).” You will then find the complete soundtrack from the 2008 Irish Indie film hit. I am a bit of romantic and thus “Falling Slowly” gets to me every time. Download it for selection number 2.

Finally, what would St. Patrick’s Day be without hearing “Danny Boy”? Search for the classic tune (be sure to set the search function to “songs”) and you will find many compelling renditions – The Irish Tenors, Andy Williams, Johnny Cash, Charlotte Church, Willie Nelson, to name a few. Do remember that each library card in entitled to 3 downloads a week, so you can also look up and download other songs by any of these artists.

There you go – music to enjoy with your Reuben Sandwich on March 17th or anytime of the year. Erin go Bragh!
